Yangyaru are gyaru who were previously yankii. Originally, during the trend of gyaru fashion, many women who transitioned from yankii to gyaru played a significant role in this trend, and particularly in the 1990s, women who became gyaru through a similar transition were also referred to as "datsu-yan" or "yankii escapees." Since yankii fashion was strongly socially antagonistic and shared many commonalities with gyaru fashion, such as blonde hair and heavy makeup, the transition from yankii to gyaru was relatively easy, contributing to the origin of this term.
